In 2010 Logan Mitchell and Mike Davis decided to put on a weekend deer hunt for wounded Soldiers in the local area. The goal was to a be ‘let’s go hunting boys’ event rather than a tightly controlled media event.
After coordination with the staffs of each installation, three hunters came for the weekend, Gary Everett, John Lightsey and Al Goetzenger.
On the first day, the Soldiers toured the Davis’ historical home built in 1889. The home is on the National Register of Historical Places and is a designated an “Alabama Live-In-A-Landmark.” The Davis’ home was decked out for Christmas as it was recently part of the 2010 Eufaula Candlelight Christmas Tour. To get everyone in the hunting frame of mind a spicy “deer” chili lunch was served by Mike’s wife, Cynthia Davis.
The next two days, Saturday and Sunday, the Soldiers participated in a deer hunt. The Mitchell family graciously donated the use of their family cabin during the Soldier’s stay in Eufaula. All hunters had opportunities to shoot a deer and we all definitely had a great time telling war stories or in some cases, “There I was” around the campfire. As we used to say in the Army… a good time was had by all!
Below are some pictures of the hunters, and friends who helped Logan and Mike put on the weekend.
